Craftsman Craftsman is a private-label manufacturer of hand tools and lawn and garden equipment for Sears Holdings Corporation.
On May 20, 1927, the Craftsman trademark was registered by Sears. Prior to that occurrence, Sears hired a man named Arthur Barrows to be the head of the company's Hardware Department. He liked the name Craftsman (then used by the Marion-Craftsman Tool Company) so he offered Marion-Craftsman a reported $500.00 for the rights to the name.
The Sears line of tools uses a well-known pricing structure of "good, better, best", with the Craftsman brand as the middle tier and Craftsman Professional as the highest tier.
The lowest tier (originally branded Sears) was discontinued in the late 1980s to be replaced by the Companion tool line. However, Companion was also discontinued, only to be replaced by the Evolv tool line in 2008.
As a near American staple, Sears has run the Craftsman Club customer loyalty program sine 1991 and is one of the oldest such programs by any retailer.
There are 219 products in the Craftsman brand with an median grade ranking of B.
